The first mating, an F1 mating, is between two purebred dog breeds, the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. Hybrid dog breeding or crossbreeding in dogs follows a specific system. The fleece coat has that wavy, soft teddy bear look and feel that gives these Labradoodles their nickname. But more than largely non-shedding purebred Poodle coat. The fleece coat also sheds less than a high shedding purebred Labrador Retriever coat. This is because the adult coat is less like hair than the Labrador Retriever breed line and less like curls than the Poodle breed line. The fleece coat type represents the most even distribution of genes. This has resulted in Labradoodles with three different coat types: hair, fleece and wool. And it can be hard to predict in advance exactly which coat quality genes each puppy inherits from the parent dogs. Labradoodle dogs were originally bred to produce a non-shedding coat that would not trigger pet allergies. This is because it is relatively easy to maintain and it looks very cute on the dog.

Trained professional dog groomers often recommend the teddy bear cut.

It is also sometimes called the puppy cut. In the world of dog grooming, there is such a thing as the teddy bear cut. Here are the five main reasons you may run across this term to describe a Labradoodle. These days you’ll see them on the fall/winter 2019 runways of Christian Dior, Isabel Marant, Acne, and Chloé, and then of course, on the street, though those are likely faux-fur instead. First designed for men, the versions worn by Salvador Dalí on his 1936 transatlantic trip to New York, and in the 1960s by Mick Jagger were made of cotton-backed alpaca wool woven by the German stuffed-toy brand Steiff (hence the teddy bear name). The teddy coat got its start in postwar Britain, when upper-class motorists wore them to keep warm. “It usually starts with European editors and eventually filters its way down to celebrities, then to the masses, which is clearly apparent now, with every brand pushing its iteration of the teddy bear coat.” She wore the coat straight off the Max Mara runway,” says Amanda Murray, a private stylist at Farfetch. It makes me wonder: Where did it all come from? “Carine Roitfeld put her stamp of approval on it back in 2013. I’ve seen it on Kim Kardashian West, Hailey Baldwin (above), and Rita Ora, among others. I see them as soon as I leave my apartment, on the subway and on Instagram. I may have bought my vintage shearling coat from an upstate thrift store back in 2011, but for some reason it seems like fall 2018 is really the season of the teddy coat.
